Cultural Heritage Conservation for Indoor Environment
The library of University of Coimbra in Portugal -- one of the ten most beautiful libraries in the world. More than 20,000 books preserved since the 16th century and was built 800 years ago. The rare collections kept in the library are recently facing enormous pressure of endangerment by the incremental number of visitors to the library.
Our team uses the advanced intelligent sensing technologies to build a custom-made system for the library as a way to protect the precious collections. The system is also used by the Coimbra Science Museum and many other places.

AlmaBike-CanarinII aims to develop an outdoor environmental monitoring system with intelligent sensing techniques. Shared bicycles have been equipped with smart sensing devices that will track movements and air pollution emissions. Taking advantage of the city's digital communication infrastructure, the collected data can be transferred in real-time to the server, making it accessible to citizens and administration.
The system can be used on 1) Smart city planning and managing; 2) Placing bicycle points in strategic positions and making cycling routes suggestion; 3) Setting roadblocks and placing racks.
Test platform has been conducted in the university of Bologna.

Cloud-based intelligent portable personal real-time environmental monitoring system -- Canarin
Canarin won the 2nd place in International ICT Innovative Services Awards 2016 -- IC1. Canarin has the ability to capture data on a number of pollutants and environmental factors (i.e. temperature, pressure, etc.) and is highly scalable. It can also perform data localization and geo-tagging. Moreover, the operating time of Canarin can last multiple days. Nevertheless, the small size and weight of Canarin makes it more mobilized, yet the data accuracy of Canarin remains at high level.

Vehicular Urban Pollution Monitoring
Vehicles will be the next generation of ubiquitous pollution control system and will eventually take over the large facilities used today. We have designed and developed a new sensing architecture based on many inexpensive air quality sensors mounted on public service vehicles. The built sensor device can measure several environmental characteristics such as CO2 concentration, temperature and other pollutants.
As the vehicles move around the city they will collect the environmental data, store and transferred the data to the server for further analyzing. The server can perform data storage, data analysis and data visualization. The data can be geo-tagged on a geographical information system in order to track the path of pollutants and track down the major sources of pollution.
The figure on the right shows the CO2 levels in the main streets of Macao, the red color means there is high level of CO2 on the road, green color means low level of CO2.
Location Based Services
Vehicles instrumented with GPS and communication devices will enable a new set of location based services including on-the-go digital billboards, opportunistic advertisement, government-run emergency information. Proximity based services enable cars to gather and deliver to potential customers’ smartphone the latest offers by local businesses. In the event of a typhoon, when the 3G infrastructure is down, a city-wide mesh network and WiFi enabled emergency vehicles could perform tracking and prioritize the rescue operations.
